Question: Is Horse Plus Humane Society affiliated with or partners with the Humane Society of the United States?
Answer: No, we are not affiliated or ran by the Humane Society of the United States.  We are an independent 501(c)(3) humane society.

Question: How is Horse Plus Humane Society funded?
Answer: Horse Plus Humane Society is funded entirely on donations from people just like you.  Our average donation is only approximately $25!  Typically over 70% of every dollar donated goes directly to rescuing, sheltering and caring for animals in need.  Our overhead (operations and staffing) is usually less than 30% of our yearly budget.  We receive no government funding. We do receive some grant funding from various foundations, but we are 100% reliant on the generosity and support of the public to stay in operation.

Question: Can I volunteer?
Answer: We do have volunteer opportunities at our shelters. Please contact the shelter you are interested in volunteering at.

Question: Does Horse Plus Humane Society euthanize animals?
Answer: We offer end of life services for horses who’s owner cannot afford the high cost of euthanasia or just cannot be there when it is time to say goodbye. We rescue horses from auctions who’s owner should have had them humanely euthanized, but instead wanted to make a quick dollar off them by selling them at an auction for slaughter.  Horses that are dumped at auctions are often suffering from chronic, untreatable health conditions.  At our shelter we follow the UC Davis Unwanted Horse Assessment Protocol.  UC Davis is the world’s leader in understanding the unwanted horse situation from a veterinarian standpoint, and their suggestion is humane euthanasia by chemical injection for unadoptable, unwanted and chronically ill horses. Question: How long has Horse Plus Humane Society been rescuing animals?
Answer: Our founder, Tawnee and her husband Jason, started rescuing horses in need in 2003 and our mission was born.  To read our history, click here.

Question: Does Horse Plus Humane Society euthanize every animal after it has been sheltered for 30 days?

Answer: No, we do not have a set time limit for animals at our shelter, we have adopted horses into great homes who have been at our shelter for over a year.
